Electronics Industry
The strength of Switzerland 's electronics industry lies in a small range of niche products, with high added value. Control and instrumentation, and consumer goods (mainly watches) are the two sectors of industry, which dominate Swiss electronics output, according to the Electronics Industry in Switzerland Report. Watch production is the major industry. Overall, Switzerland was ranked 6th in Western Europe in terms of electronics output and was also the 7th largest market.
Nanotechnology
Swiss research is framed by National Research Programmes (NRP), defined by the Swiss Federal Government. The main funding bodies for nanotechnology are the Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), providing approximately €20 million annually. The regions Lausanne/Geneva, Neuchatel and Zurich are particularly active in micro and nanotechnology, followed by Basel. Leading research institutes with an international standing include CSEM and the Paul Scherrer Institute.
National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCR) has three main focus with nanotechnology; Materials with Novel Electronic Properties; Nanoscale Sciences - Impact on Life Sciences; and Quantum Photonics.
